On our 3-week journey across Europe, we were pleasantly surprised to discover Ljubljana, Slovenia offered some of the best foodie experiences. Here are our top recommendations for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

There is no better way to begin your day than by visiting this little bistro located right on the river. With its exposed brick walls and hearty breakfast options, you will leave with a happy heart and a full belly. Our choice was the EK Plate, which includes everything but the kitchen sink, and the "Egg in the Hole," a classic college dish with a touch of sophistication. This cafe is very small, and since we visited during the off-season, be mindful that it could become overcrowded during busier times.

We know this is a bold statement, but we believe Pop's Place serves some of the finest gourmet burgers in the world. Our favorite lunch items include the Dirty Mac, a unique twist on the classic "Mac," as well as the Bacon Cheese Burger, which highlights their special beef blend. Let's talk about the meat! Pop's meticulously chooses grass-fed Slovenian beef, dry-aging it on-site for over a month. Their skilled butcher then crafts a custom blend using five different beef cuts. Additionally, they bake fresh brioche buns daily. Pop's takes pride in using the best ingredients, never frozen, and always prepared in-house. Beyond food, Pop's Place offers a variety of classic and contemporary cocktails, premium whiskeys, gins, and a wide selection of local craft beers.
We had the pleasure of visiting this charming gem on two occasions and discovered that it was an ideal intimate setting for a romantic evening meal. Julija is considered a higher-end dining establishment, costing a little bit more than average, but the experience is equally higher-end. The building boasts exquisite decorations, suitable lighting, and a delightful atmosphere to enhance its offerings. Given its popularity, definitely make reservations in advance. The attentive staff and delicious Slovenian dishes make it well worth planning ahead. During our visit, we particularly enjoyed their beef goulash served with homemade polenta and the beef fillet Julija with truffles. A little tip, if you get the Lava cake with vanilla cream for dessert, ask for some of their pumpkin seed oil to drizzle on the ice cream. It might sound strange but adds a unique twist.
